Freud is an important figure in personality psychology & influence on psychology and psychiatry. instinct are fundamental causes of behaviour. two main instincts are the sex (or life) instinct and death instinct. instinct create unconscious wishes which if unfulfilled will caused a person to feel anxiety. freud proposed three level awareness that are unconscious, conscious and preconscious. the unconscious represents the largest part of mind, and contain instincts and drives. preconscious refers to thoughts and memories that can brought to consciousness. the conscious part the mind is what we are actually aware of at any time. freud proposed three personality structures that are id, ego and superego. id are original system-is unconscious and contains instincts and operates according to the pleasure principle. the ego operates according to the reality principle ad uses defence mechanisms to cope with the demands of the id and superego. the superego contains two-sub-systems: the ego-ideal and conscience. the superego attempts to deal with the conflicting demands of the id and ego- and is in touch with reality. the ego employs defence mechanisms, of which repression is of key importance. repressions is unconscious-motivated forgetting of disturbing thoughts. defence mechanism fall into three broad categories-deny, those that falsify, and those that distort reality. other defence mechanism include sublimation. psychoanalysis as a therapy requires people to use the technique of free association to uncover unconscious thoughts, repressions etc. transference describes the strong feelings (positive & negative) that the client feels for psychoanalyst. countertransference describes the feelings of the psychoanalyst for the client.analysis of the nature of the transference will reflect the client's relationships with others, particularly his or her parents. hoped beneficial
